These "in the cloud" services will dramatically increase the college's ability to rapidly deploy these services for teaching needs.
I am very enthusiastic about Amazon Web Services for educational purposes because it enables me to teach students using state of the art technology that they will see in their professional life. I'm also an instructional designer with NJIT and am very impressed with it's ability to become a platform for instructors teaching technology courses online to have virtual lab space for student projects. For example, we have an IT auditing course and use a series of Amazon Machine Images as the labs for students to conduct security audits on the machines. When the exercises are over we can just shutdown the instances and call them up next semester in their original state. -- Keith Williams
When outsourcing data in the cloud, the data owner faces several security challenges. For example, how to ensure confidentiality for data of sensitive nature? Or, how to ensure that an untrusted cloud storage provider respects the terms of its contract? The web services offered by Amazon, including EC2, EBS and S3, made it convenient to set up an environment in which students in my class could experiment with various technologies in order to address security challenges in cloud storage. --Reza Curtmola
