The College of Computing Sciences at New Jersey Institute of Technology is pleased to invite you to a Teacher Development Workshop on (tba). This workshop will be of special interest to those teaching computing, mathematics, biology and other sciences.
Each participant will receive 5.0 professional development credits.
The workshop will have two parallel options; participants will register for one option:
Cloud computing delivers computer applications, data storage and other services over a network, such as the Internet. It promises to revolutionize how we think about and how we use computation. Among the companies with a presence in the rapidly growing arena of cloud computing are Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. We will examine various definitions of cloud computing, its promise (almost unlimited resources on demand, reduced startup costs), challenges (resource management, privacy), and implications (how will it influence the job market?). We will also illustrate some basic concepts through a hands-on session using a web-based tool for managing Amazon's platform for cloud computing
Biotechnology enables us to "sample" genomes at many significant locations accurately and cheaply. A million targeted locations on a person's genome can now be "read" for less than $1,000. Using genomic data from a large number of people and modern computational techniques, "genome-wide assocation studies" seek to uncover how particular genetic variants relate to eye color, height, weight, susceptibility to disease and many other attributes. We will cover how such studies are designed and how to analyze and interpret their results. We will examine some recent studies and consider how they contribute to creating "personalized medicine," customized to a person's individual genetic signature.
High school teachers in computing, mathematics, biology and other sciences.
