CCS Fall 2008 Teacher Development Workshop

Wednesday September 24, 2008

The College of Computing Sciences at New Jersey Institute of Technology is pleased to invite you to a Teacher Development Workshop on September 24, 2008.

Each participant will receive 3.0 professional development credits.

This workshop will be of special interest to those teaching computing, business, and mathematics.

The workshop will have three parallel tracks; each participant can register for one of them:

  •  Computer Modeling of Business Decisions (Marvin Nakayama)

Businesses are constantly faced with making decisions regarding limited resources, such as money, personnel, or raw materials.  For example, consider an airline that wants to determine a how to assign its flight crews to particular flights over the next month.  We will study one particular type of business decision model known as linear programming, and show how we can solve it using Microsoft Excel.

  • Making Digital Movies (Roberto Munoz)

Learn how to teach students to create digital videos for use in class projects using freeware or software that comes with MS Windows.  Learn to capture videos from a webcam or mobile phone, and import videos created from other sources.  Edit the movie by rearranging, combining, splitting and trimming clips.  Add movie titles and credits.  Incorporate transitions, special effects, and narration.  Include pictures, either obtained from a video frame or in separate files.  Preview the movie project to determine if all elements of the movie fit together correctly.  Finally, produce the movie project as a single video file.  Sample lesson plans will be distributed.

  • Google Technologies (Barry Cohen)

Google is known as a Web search company. Its mission is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." In pursuing this mission, Google has built the world's largest Web-based computing infrastructure. This holds the potential to shift much of personal and corporate computing from the desktop to the Web. We'll explore these "Google technologies."
